What is API 5L is?
The American Petroleum Institute (API) has established the API 5L standard for pipe fittings. This standard covers both seamless and welded steel pipeline fittings. API 5L steel pipe and fittings are suitable for pipeline transportation systems in the oil and gas industry, as API 5L materials are highly compatible with transporting various media such as gas, water, and oil. The size range for API 5L Grade B pipe fittings is limited only by the manufacturer’s capabilities.
Specifications for API 5L Fittings Material strictly adhere to the International Organization for Standardization or the ISO 3183. The specification standard for ISO 3183 has standardized pipeline transportation systems across a wide range of materials, equipment and offshore structures covering industries like the petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries. The technical committee that oversees or authors these standards have recognized that there are two basic Product Specifications Levels also known as PSL for technical requirements. Hence, the technical committee has developed two Product Specifications Levels which are referred to as – PSL 1 and PSL 2. While the PSL 1 is a standard quality for line pipe, the PSL 2 contains additional mechanical properties, chemicals as well as testing requirements.
