What’s Cement Lining?
Cement lined carbon steel pipe fittings are typically factory-welded butt-weld pipe fittings to ASME B16.9 with cement mortar or concrete liners. Cement mortar is a mixture of cement, fine aggregate (sand) and water. Concrete is a mixture of cement, fine aggregate (sand), coarse aggregate (gravel) and water. The cement lining, either cement mortar lining or concrete lining, is applied to the inner surface of the fittings by a proper installation method. Cement-mortar lining is generally used for carbon steel fittings up to 20″, while stronger concrete lining is used for sizes 24″ and larger. However, the choice of lining is at the discretion of the user.

Cement mortar and concrete are known to provide significant protection to embedded ferrous materials from the corrosive effects of soil and water. Cement-mortar and concrete linings have become the most commonly used protection for pipes and fittings in water and wastewater applications. They are very economical and provide excellent corrosion protection. Cement lined carbon steel butt weld pipe fittings include a variety of product forms such as elbows (90° & 45°), tees (straight & lateral), reducers (concentric & eccentric), crosses (equal & reduced), end caps, bends (3D & 5D), 180° returns and saddles.
Function & Applications
Cement mortar or concrete linings protect carbon steel by three interrelated processes:
(1) Cement linings form a barrier coating that prevents physical damage to the metal surface. They passivate the metal surface.
(2) Hydrated cement is highly alkaline, with a PH of about 12.5. At this PH, a passivating oxide film forms and remains on the metal surface, preventing corrosion.
(3) Chemical reactions can occur in the mortar or concrete lining that can render infiltrating corrosives harmless or form compounds that physically block further infiltration of corrosives.
Cement-lined carbon steel pipe fittings protect the internal steel surface from attack and damage by corrosion, which can result in leakage, scale or tuberculation, or a combination of these defects. They are found to be highly effective and economical for conveying fluids such as raw fresh water, potable water, raw sewage, treated sewage, seawater and power station cooling water.

Manufacture & Fabrication
The carbon steel fittings, seamless or welded, are manufactured by a wrought process such as extrusion, bending, pressing, forming, rolling or forging, etc. Due to the irregularity of the shape and the passage of the fittings, the cement mortar or concrete linings are generally applied by hand, sometimes with the aid of pneumatic tools. The thickness of the lining is determined by the designer or user. The surface of the lining must be compact and smooth. The mortar is mixed using 1 part cement to 3 parts fine aggregate (sand), with sufficient water added to achieve the required workability. After the cement lining has been applied to the internal surface, the carbon steel pipe fittings shall be moved to a curing area. Care must be taken at all times to prevent damage to the lining. Curing methods include accelerated curing and wet curing. When the cement lining is cured, the outside surface of the fitting shall be painted black.
