Coils are the pre-fabricated parts of a piping system. Pipes, flanges and fittings are called spools and are manufactured before they are used in the piping system. Coils are preformed to facilitate assembly using jacks, gauges and other tools to join the parts together. Coils join long pipes with flanges from the end of the long pipes so that they can be bolted together with matching flanges. These joints are embedded in concrete walls before the concrete is poured. This system must be properly aligned prior to concreting as it must withstand the weight and force of the structure.

They are generally easily corroded by the elements to which they are exposed; water and natural electrolytes. Adequate protection must be provided when using spool systems. The manufacture of spools is very important because of the intensive pipework required in shipbuilding and other marine industries. Coils offer great advantages as they reduce space limitations on site. With this advantage, all industries using piping have a great opportunity to increase the efficiency of their piping systems and reduce their manpower and time requirements.

Pipe reel systems are most commonly used in power plants and petroleum refineries where intensive piping is required. These systems involve the transport and conveyance of liquids and gases, and these conveyance systems require a lot of connecting parts. There is no room for error in these systems. The assembly and fabrication of piping must be done correctly. This piping application has two main stages;

1.pipe spool production

2.Installation on site

Pipe coils are made from raw pipe and pipe fittings. The raw pipe is cut to pre-determined sizes to suit the pipe fittings and other components.

There are two main parts to the spooling process:

1.Roll correction and welding

2.Durable position fitting and welding
