What is the 3LPE?
3LPE means Three-Layer Polyethylene Wrapping, which is a multilayer coating composed of three functional components: A high performance Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) primer, followed by a copolymer adhesive and an outer layer of polyethylene which provides tough, durable protection. 3LPE systems provide excellent pipeline protection for small and large diameter pipelines operating at up to moderately high temperatures. About API 5L
API 5L, or the American Petroleum Institute Specification 5L, is a standard for seamless and welded steel pipes used in conveying gas, water, and oil in the petroleum and natural gas industries. It specifies requirements for the manufacture of two product specification levels (PSL1 and PSL2) of seamless and welded steel pipes, detailing chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensions, testing procedures, and other criteria to ensure quality and performance in pipeline applications.
API 5L covers different grades of steel pipe, each of which is assigned a specific grade, such as API 5L Grade B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, X80, and others. These grades are defined by their mechanical properties, chemical composition and performance characteristics. The choice of grade depends on factors such as the type of hydrocarbon being transported, operating conditions and environmental considerations. API 5L X42 PSL2 Elbow

What is API 5L X42 PSL2 standard?
The American Petroleum Institute’s technical committee has established two product specification levels, resulting in differences in the manufacture of API 5L X42 seamless pipes. These pipes are categorized as PSL-1 and PSL-2. PSL-1 offers a standard quality level for line pipes, while PSL-2 includes additional requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, notch toughness, and extra NDT criteria. Therefore, buyers must specify the required PSL level for the manufacture of API 5L X42 carbon steel pipes. While API 5L X42 PSL-1 pipes meet standard quality, PSL-2 has more detailed requirements and stricter inspection methods. API 5L X42 PSL2 Elbow
The requirements for PSL 2 X42 carbon steel pipe include test methods, mechanical requirements and chemical composition. Although Black Painted X42 Line Pipe is made from carbon steel, this alloy has been used in the manufacture of pipe mainly for its toughness and hardness properties. As the API 5L x42 DSAW pipe has very low or no corrosion resistance properties, these pipes are coated with 3LPE or FBE or black paint to improve their corrosion resistance properties. For example, the 3LPE coated API 5L x42 pipe, which is first coated with a high performance fusion bonded epoxy primer, followed by a copolymer adhesive with the outer polyethylene layer. The 3LPE coated Grade X42 Line Pipe is used in systems where toughness and durability for use at moderately high temperatures are the primary requirements.

SMYS of api 5l grade x42 pipe
Check the below formula to calculate 20% SMYS of X42 Pipe
- 12”, API 5L X42, 0.250w, ERW. SMYS = 42,000
- 20% of 42,000 = 0.2 x 42,000 = 8400 psi
- Barlow’s formula: P = 2St/D (do NOT use E, F, or T)
- P = 2 x 8400 x 0.250 / 12.75 = 329.41 psig←
Class 3 design = 2 x 42,000 x 0.250 / 12.75 x 0.50 x 1 x 1 = 823 psig But anything over 329 MAOP will cause it to be a transmission line
